Why natural finishes get better with age

A practical note from the studio on making residential design decisions that still feel right years later.

Patina is part of the design

A material that changes is not necessarily a material that is failing. Timber deepens, brass softens and stone carries small marks. When those changes are expected, a home can become richer rather than simply older.

Choose what can be maintained

We prefer materials that can be repaired, refinished or allowed to age gracefully. That usually means fewer fragile surface treatments and more attention to the quality of the base material.

Let contrast do less work

A calm palette does not need to be flat. Texture, grain and subtle variation can give a room depth without relying on a large number of colours or finishes.
